Please read the following detailed information on how to apply for a Canada-Brazil Ciência sem Fronteiras doctoral or post-doctoral scholarship. Once you have reviewed the program eligibility requirements, and wish to apply for a Ciência sem Fronteiras scholarship, please send an email to CBIE at CsF Doctoral to request a user name and password to access the online application form.
1. Identification of a program of study and supervisor at a Canadian institution.
Candidates will identify their program of study and supervisor at a Canadian university.
If candidates do not yet have a specific university in mind, they are encouraged to consult the database of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) to have a better understanding of the Canadian institutions that offer doctorate programs. The AUCC database can be accessed here.
In addition, CBIE has recently developed a database that provides access to specific doctoral research project opportunities currently available in a number of Canadian universities for Ciência sem Fronteiras doctoral students, that can be accessed once a user name and password has been issued.
2. Completion and submission of the doctoral or post-doctoral application with supporting documents on CBIE’s protected portal.
Candidates will complete the online application form on CBIE’s portal, at which time they will be required to upload the following documents to the online application form in .pdf format:
- scanned copy of passport;
- official undergraduate and Master’s transcripts in Portuguese with a certified translation in English or French;
- for Visiting PhD and Post-doctoral candidates, official PhD transcript in Portuguese with a certified translation in English or French;
- English or French language proficiency test results; and
- signed and dated consent form.
The candidates will also have the opportunity to upload other relevant documents, such as their proposed research project or the academic CV from their Canadian supervisor, if available.
Note: If you do not yet have a valid passport, please attach a copy of your passport application, if available. If you have not completed language testing or have not yet received your results, please upload a copy of your confirmation of language test date. As soon as you receive the required documents please forward them to CBIE.
3. Conditional Acceptance into a Doctoral or Post-Doctoral program at a Canadian University.
CBIE will forward the completed doctoral or post-doctoral scholarship applications to Canadian universities selected by the candidates, and will coordinate with the Canadian institutions on behalf of eligible candidates. CBIE will also coordinate with the candidate should further information be required by a Canadian institution. The Canadian institutions will review the applications and make conditional offers of acceptance to eligible candidates.
CBIE will inform the candidates whether they have been conditionally accepted by the Canadian institution.
4. Completion and Submission of Scholarship Application to CNPq
Once candidates have received their conditional letter of acceptance from a Canadian university, they must prepare their application for the CsF scholarship to CNPq in Brazil. CBIE, the Canadian university, and in the case of visiting PhD students, the Brazilian university, will provide support as needed.
For more detailed information about the CNPq application process and all the supporting documents required, please consult the CsF website.
5. Notification of Award of Scholarship by CNPq to Successful Candidates
CNPq will review the applications and communicate directly with the candidates to advise applicants that they have been awarded a scholarship.
6. Application Process for Study/Work Permits and Canadian Visa
Successful candidates who have been awarded a CsF doctoral or post-doctoral scholarship should consult the websites of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and the Consulate of Canada in São Paulo, Brazil to start the application process for their study and work permits, and Canadian visa. For students studying in the Canadian province of Québec, a Québec Acceptance Certificate (Certificat d’acceptation du Québec-CAQ) is also required from Immigration et Communautés Culturelles Québec.
Please note that successful candidates will be responsible for their own travel arrangements, study and work permits, visa and health insurance.
